Arnold Menezes studied for his undergraduate medical career at the University of Bombay having completed this in 1966. This followed by an internship and subsequent residency at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics. In addition, he did a fellowship under Dr. William Bell in Pediatric Neurology in 1973. He joined the Neurosurgery faculty in January, 1974, and rose to be a Professor in 1985 as Vice Chairman of the department. He also holds a joint appointment as a Professor in the Department of Pediatrics.

As far as professional affiliations, he is a member of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons; Pediatric Section of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons; Neurosurgical Society of America and was its president in 2008; American Society for Pediatric Neurosurgery; Joint Section on Spinal Disorders of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons and became the Chairman in 1995; in 1992 he was the Chairperson for the American Society for Pediatric Neurosurgery; founding member of the North American Skull Base Society; Pediatric Spine Section of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons; founding member of American Association of South Asian Neurosurgeons and was president in 1995; honorary member of the Canadian Neurosurgical Society in 1990 and American Academy of Pediatrics and Pediatric Neurosurgery Specialty Fellowship in 1992.

The areas of special interest are craniovertebral junction, spinal dysraphism, bony compression lesions in children and cranial base with fusion.

From an academic standpoint he was the Millennium Scholar Meritorious Service Award from the Section on Disorders of the Spine and Peripheral Nerves of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons and Congress of Neurological Surgeons in 2000; honored guest of the Congress of Neurological Surgeons in San Francisco in 2004; names the Cleveland Clinic World Class Innovator in 2009; Gold Medal award for distinguished and outstanding service by the Neurosurgical Society of America in 2014; Franc D. Ingraham Award for Distinguished Service and Achievement from the Section on Pediatric Neurological Surgery of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons and Congress of Neurological Surgeons in 2019; and the recipient of silver level impactor scholar at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine in 2022.

Arnold Menezes is a member of the advisory board for the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, the Journal Neurosurgery, Operative Neurosurgery, Spinal Surgery-Japan, Head and Neck Surgery, World Neurosurgery, and Clinical Neurology and Neurosurgery.

He has published 256 peer-review manuscripts, 130 textbook chapters and 4 textbooks.
